At the end of May, Sapna NYC held a graduation party for all three levels of ESOL classes. Students who had attended a year of classes received a certificate for completing their respective level of ESOL. ESOL teacher, Mary Fiss, gave a heartwarming speech about teaching at Sapna NYC. About her students, she said, “I don’t use this work lightly, but I loved working with you all.”
Conversation ESOL teacher, Sanjana Khan, led the graduation ceremony. The event included speeches from Executive Director, Alison Karasz, and ESOL teacher, Mary Fiss. After students received their certificates, they ate a delicious meal in which each student brought a dish and took pictures with their new and old friends. ESOL also serves as a means for new immigrant women to build their social networks, an important aspect when it comes to feeling comfortable and settling into their new environment.
The graduation party continued to highlight the importance of ESOL for community members. Participant Fahmida stated, “I needed ESOL because I wanted to learn English so I can communicate with others and improve myself. I liked the teachers- Mary, Sanjana, Saiya- very much because of their teaching style.” Another participant Sabera said, “I am new here to this country and I realized that I need to learn English in order to get a job and speak to others. There are so many opportunities offered here at Sapna NYC and I want to be able to participate so I took English class to begin my journey here.”
ESOL will break for the summer months; the next term of ESOL will start in September. All three levels of ESOL will be offered again.
