About Sapna NYC

about_usSapna NYC is committed to cultural competence and ethnic diversity. We define cultural competence as the ability to work in cross cultural situations, promote respect and understanding of differences, develop programs and services that acknowledge cultural setting; and help mobilize cultural resources.

Current board members reflect the geographic and cultural diversity of South Asia, with members from North and South India, West Bengal, and Bangladesh. Our staff is similarly diverse, including Hindi/Urdu and Bengali speakers. Our front line staff are made up by peer workers—women from the community who provide sensitive, strength-based support.

Our vision is a world in which all South Asian immigrant women are empowered to realize their dreams, while contributing their best to families and communities.

Our Approach

Sapna NYC uses a holistic empowerment approach to work with unemployed, underserved South Asian immigrant women. We provide support and build fragmented social networks through health interventions and economic empowerment strategies. Our community collaborates with us on participatory research to address health and economic needs that matter to them; and we evaluate our programs using state of the art scientific methods.
